Design Technology
“Pupils are highly creative, as seen in displays of their exceptional art and design work.”
- Independent Schools Inspectorate
Design and Technology is a very popular subject at Orwell Park. All pupils in Years 3-8 have a double lesson each week with the option to attend additional activities. Some Year 8 pupils also sit Design & Technology scholarships to their Senior Schools as part of their entrance attempt.
Within lessons, pupils study various aspects of the subject. Attention to the whole ‘Design Process’ is encouraged, with pupils taught how to react to design briefs, think of design ideas, sketch them by hand or on computer and see them through to a finished model or prototype.
The school’s workshop is exceptionally well resourced and we try to make the most of the excellent facilities. The Drawing Room has a modern touch screen whiteboard and set of iMac computers, mainly used to draft Computer Aided Drawings. The workshop itself is divided into three sections: wood; metals and plastics. All of these areas are spacious and fully equipped with traditional tools and machinery.
As well as a focus on traditional hand skills the department is also keeping abreast of new developments. We have a new 3D printer, which has been used to great effect, especially when prototyping models and designs.
Pupils leave Orwell Park with an excellent grounding in the subject and usually find themselves ahead of the game at Senior School.
