The OPS Challenge is designed to give Orwell Park pupils a wide-ranging experience of outdoor, social and leadership experience that they can use for personal development and put on their ‘CV’ to stand them apart when being interviewed by Senior Schools.
The scheme is run on similar lines to the Duke of Edinburgh awards, with Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Pupils earn points towards an award by participating in activity sessions and camps/excursions.
The scheme is for pupils in Years 6 and 7 and happens once a week. Skills that are delivered in Year 6 are built on and furthered in Year 7. There are trips aimed at each Year group, with Year 6 currently spending a weekend camping in North Norfolk and walking sections of the Peddars Way and Year 7 involved in a ‘Tough Bushcraft’ weekend in the Brecon Beacons. There are further trips at weekends, such as canoe trips on the River Stour and also camps in the school grounds.
