Ancient Oaks in the Park

We were very pleased over half term to host visitors from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew led by Alijos Farjon, Honorary Research Associate at the Royal Botanic Gardens. The purpose of the visit was to record the ancient oaks in Orwell Park. It was found that Orwell Park has 13 recorded oaks over 6 metres in circumference. This marks Orwell out as possibly one of the most important sites for ancient oaks in England, with one of the oak trees estimated to be over 700 years old! This all adds to the fascinating history of the Orwell Park as it would have been in medieval and Tudor times
