The Battlefields of the Somme, Orangery Lecture
Edward Hudson gave a talk on the Somme Battlefields on Tuesday 10th May. Edward has visited the Somme battlefields for the past twenty-five years, conducting tours for schoolchildren, families, cycling groups and even the American readers of the New York Times!
His visual narrative of the Somme battlefields dealt with the highlights of the long drawn out battle, dwelling on the heroism displayed by the participants who included Siegfried Sassoon, the war poet, JR Tolkien author of The Lord of the rings, and two former Prime Ministers of Great Britain.
From the children’s point of view, the highlight of the evening was being able to look at the genuine artefacts Edward had collected over the years, including revolvers and cavalry sabres.
We thoroughly enjoyed Edward’s visit and look forward to welcoming him again soon.
