On Sunday 6th November, 13 pupils from Year 6 met at Dedham Mill Pond to paddle the River Stour using Canadian Canoes. The weather was sunny but the air-temperature was cold with a strong accompanying breeze. After a short safety talk and practice in the Mill Pond the group set off downstream towards Flatford. The wind made paddling complicated; the freeboard of the Canadian Canoe is quite substantial. Around the halfway mark the group disembarked onto the river bank for hot drinks, food and working out how to use a group shelter to keep warm. With the weather continuing to pick up, the canoes were lashed together in threes to aid stability and profess against both wind and current. Return progress was slow but cheerful and all of the pupils are to be commended on their positive attitude in the face of the adverse conditions. OPS Challenge isn’t always meant to be easy……..
